Our professional sanding services restore all types of timber flooring from classic T&G to parquet floors, chip board and cork to name a few.  Existing timber floors that are stained, worn or generally lack lustre will benefit from our professional timber floor sanding service.

We offer precision floor sanding and have the capability of re-surfacing large commercial floor areas quickly and efficiently.  We are trained to the highest standards and we ensure that there is a quality finish to your timber floor by performing the following floor sanding procedures:

Preparation

Vital preparation for sanding is to carry out any necessary floor repairs on your timber floor using matching timber boards, punching nails and filling gaps with matching colours. We’ll do this to perfection – and even scrape off gnarly old adhesives.

Sanding

The timber floor is then sanded to a fine finish to remove any scratches.  Our Superior finish – using 3 grades of sandpapers, down to a fine 120 grit screened finish.
We recommend this for feature floors. Our specialised machinery guarantees a stunning finish, the best in New Zealand.

Finishes

To finish your sanded floor, we use only the best quality polyurethane, made to wear well in New Zealand conditions, even with constant foot traffic. Available in low sheen, satin or gloss in water-borne or moisture cured. There’s also a non-yellowing polyurethane available, either in moisture cured or non-toxic, water-borne.

As you can see from the before and after pictures in our gallery, Harbour Floorsanding provide perfectly finished floors.  With maintenance, your refurbished floor should out last any laminate or carpet.

Polyurethane Finish

We offer a variety of polyurethane finishes for you to choose from.  The more commonly polyurethanes used are moisture-cured Gloss, Satin and Low Sheen.  There is also water-borne polyurethane in Gloss, Satin and Low Sheen.  We can apply a variety of finishes and textures to compliment your décor and lifestyle including non-yellowing polyurethane, stain finishes and blonding.

Staining and Blonding

When thinking about changing the colour of your timber, consider these issues:

Timber should never be stained to be lighter than the original timber. If you want a lighter appearance, refer to the information below about Blonding.

Many people consider staining to cover inconsistencies in floor timbers, such as floors made from different timbers, or timbers of different ages or levels of wear:

  • If your floor is patched from different species of timber (such as a mix of pine and native timbers), staining will not make the varying timbers match exactly.
  • Older timber will result in a darker stain when compared to new timber.
  • The stained colours will not hide variation in the timbers unless we use a dark coloured stain.
  • The more porous the timber, the darker the stained colour.
  • The colour of stained timber is richer when polyurethane is applied.
  • Talk to us about the effect you are hoping to achieve from your floor and we'll work with you to accomplish the look you want.

Staining

More and more customers seem to be going for the stained look.  Stained floors add an aged look, character and charm to any home or room.  There are many different shades to choose from.  Staining is a lot more time consuming and can take up to twice as long as a straight forward sand and polyurethane job, therefore the price for stain is a little more expensive.

Blonding

This is the white wash effect that has become very popular.  We apply our white wash solution to your floor with sometimes more than one coat being required to achieve the desired look.

** For staining and blonding, contact us and we will do a colour sample on your floor prior to starting the job to achieve your desired look.

Reglazing - To Revitalise Your Floor

Commonly known as a maintenence coat. A cost effective way to bring new life into your existing floors.  If your existing timber floors are looking a bit tired, we can easily revitalise them without having to completely re-sand and coat.  This is called a re-glaze.  We simply come in, wash your floors with a re-glaze solution, lightly sand and apply one to two coats of polyurethane of your choice - Gloss, Satin or Low Sheen.  This is great value if you are trying to sell your home or if your floors are in need of a facelift.

Please be aware that a reglaze cannot be done on a floor which has worn through to the bare timber.  You will require having your floor completely re-sanded and re-coated.

Preparation for Carpet, Vinyl, Tiles and Overlay - Including Builders Cut

We carry our any sanding preparation work that is required before laying carpet, vinyl, cork, tiles and overlay flooring.  For a Builders Cut, we sand particle board seams or the entire floor.

All Rubbish Removed From the Site

Floor sanding and floor preparation can be a very messy and dusty job.  The bags on our machines collect most of the sawdust for us and we take all our rubbish with us and dispose of it ourselves so you don't need to worry about rubbish bags and polyurethane containers being left behind.  We also dispose of the carpets, vinyl and tiles that we lift in preparation for the floor sanding which can be accosted for in your quote.

Uplifts and Staple Removal

We can do the uplifting of carpet, vinyl, cork, tiles and staples.  We can take care of disposing all of this for you too.  Please note that vinyl laid between the 1960's to mid 1980's often had asbestos in the backing material.  We recommend that you get your flooring checked for asbestos before we will do any work on it. (Look in the yellow pages under "Asbestos" and you'll find several companies that offer a testing service.) Approach someone that is certified by the Department of Labour.  If asbestos is found, you will need to have the flooring removed by a professional company before we can sand it.

Commercial Discounts

If you have a group of floors or a large commercial floor to do, just ask us about our discount options.

Guaranteed Workmanship

We are so confident of our workmanship that we offer this guarantee to you.  Now you can be proud of your timber floor and confident that you have made the right decision.

NO JOB TOO BIG OR SMALL!!!
